Manual medicine is the science of manual treatment and deals with reversible dysfunction of the locomotor system. It covers all diagnostic and therapeutic techniques associated with the spine and major limbs of the body.
You have to visualize that the physician is repositioning joints into their correct alignment. This kind of treatment goes back to the old culture of Chinese and Egyptians. There are Greek reliefs from the 5th century showing spine treatment very similar to the current treatment.
In the past manual medicine was principally practised by laypersons, however it is now a taught science and demands an intensive education.
